Yu Hong speaks to Louisiana Channel about her exhibition 'Another One Bites the Dust' in Venice
31 July 2024
On the occasion of the opening of La Biennale di Venezia in April 2024, Louisiana Channel met with artist Yu Hong at her exhibition 'Another One Bites the Dust', taking place at the Chiesetta della Misericordia in Cannaregio until 24 November.
A painter of epic scenes and intimate moments, Yu Hong constructs modern-day fables and complex, allegorical compositions by channeling historical, narrative-driven art through a fiercely contemporary lens. Presented by the Asian Art Initiative of the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and curated by Dr. Alexandra Munroe, Senior Curator at Large, Global Arts, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, this exhibition features new figurative and narrative paintings that respond to the architectural and cultural context of the Chiesetta, a deconsecrated Romanesque-Byzantine church founded by Augustinian friars in the tenth century. Conditioned by this architectural site, 'Another One Bites the Dust' presents Yu Hong’s work outside the bounds of art-historical conventions, examining the artist’s worlding of supernatural realism as a radically anachronistic stance that further destabilizes our notions of contemporary life.
