Wael Shawky to represent Egypt in Venice at 2024 edition of La Biennale
11 January 2024
Lisson Gallery, along with Barakat Contemporary, Galleria Lia Rumma and Sfeir-Semler Gallery, is delighted to announce that Wael Shawky will represent Egypt at the 2024 edition of La Biennale di Venezia.
A natural storyteller, Shawky takes historiographical and literary references as starting points for his concentrated narratives, in which he interweaves fable, fact and fiction. Tackling notions of national, religious and artistic identity through film, performance, painting and sculpture, based on extensive periods of research and enquiry, Shawky frames contemporary culture through the lens of historical tradition and vice versa.
Furthermore, Lisson is pleased to announce Shawky's solo exhibition 'I Am Hymns of The New Temples' at Museo Palazzo Grimani in Venice, opening on 17 April 2024. Co-curated by Massimo Osanna, Andrea Viliani and Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, in the context of the program 'Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters'.
