Stained glass window by Stanley Whitney at Baltimore Museum of Art's newly opened Matisse study centre

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) opened its new Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies. The BMA collection of Matisse's works is considered to be the largest and most comprehensive in the world. This new 2,500 sq. ft study center on the Museum's first floor includes a dedicated gallery for Matisse's works on paper, a study room and workspaces open by appointment to scholars and students, as well as the first permanent museum commission by Stanley Whitney.

Titled Dance with me Henri, the commission comprises three stained glass windows that line the corridor between the center's gallery and the BMA's contemporary wing. The installation of hand-blown glass panes, composed in grids with organic contours, activates the space with a glorious play of coloured light and reflects the influence of Whitney’s early pilgrimage to the Matisse chapel in the south of France.
