Spencer Finch: 'Lost Man Creek'

30 September 2016

'Lost Man Creek' by Spencer Finch recreates, at a 1:100 scale, a 790-acre section of the Redwood National Park in California. The miniature forest will live in the eastern triangular lawn of MetroTech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn, with a footprint measuring 4,500 square feet featuring some 4,000 young Dawn Redwoods, from 1 October 2016 – 13 May 2018.

Supported by Public Art Fund and Forest City Ratner Companies (FCRC), 'Lost Man Creek' scales down the topography and tree canopy of Redwood, with trees that range from 98 to 380 feet, becoming 1 to 4 feet in the installation. The miniature forest will flourish with the help of a specific planting and irrigation system, designed to provide the trees with an optimum living environment within this urban context. The trees will be rehoused when the exhibition closes.

Visitors will be able to experience the work from a viewing platform installed on one side of the work, as well as from ground level, offering different perspectives of the installation. Please visit www.publicartfund.org for more information on the project.

Spencer Finch will discuss the installation and other large-scale, public artworks in a talk at The New School in New York on Wednesday 16 November, from 6.30 – 8.30pm. Please click the link below for tickets: http://events.newschool.edu/event/public_art_fund_talks_at_tns_spencer_finch#.V9_vyz4rJz8
