'Sky of Time' by Tatsuo Miyajima opens at Espoo Museum of Modern Art

From 9 October, the Espoo Museum of Modern Art (EMMA) in Espoo, Finland, will present a new immersive installation work by Tatsuo Miyajima, entitled 'Sky of Time'. Known for his experiential, philosophical works reflecting on time and eternity, Miyajima's signature use of ever-changing digital LED counters symbolises the ceaseless flow of time and the human relationship to the vast universe.
'Sky of Time' is the title of both the exhibition and a newly commissioned artwork which marks the continuation of a collaboration between EMMA and the Saastamoinen Foundation. Miyajima's meditative installation consists of hundreds of LED counters fixed to the ceiling of a darkened space, the glowing green numbers counting down at a unique pace between nine and one. Instead of hitting zero, the 'gadgets' darken momentarily before beginning their process again. The green light is a reference to the Aurora Borealis, which the artist saw twice on a previous visit to Rovaniemi, Finland.
On Tuesday 8 October from 5-6pm, Miyajima will be in conversation with EMMA's Chief Curator Arja Miller to discuss 'Sky of Time' and the main themes that influence the artist's wider practice.
'Sky of Time' is on view at EMMA until 8 March 2020.
