Shirazeh Houshiary: 'The River Is Within Us' at STPI
10 March 2016
'The River is Within Us' at the STPI – Creative Workshop & Gallery in Singapore is the first solo exhibition of UK-based artist Shirazeh Houshiary in Southeast Asia.
Houshiary is known for multi multimedia installations like Breath, a collateral event at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), as well as the 2008 East Window for St Martins in the Fields, London. She has completed several site-specific commissions within the fashion industry for notable figures like Jimmy Choo and Victoria Beckham. Though primarily a sculptor, her unique preoccupation with painting, installation, film and architectural projects sets her apart from other contemporary sculptors.
Her readiness to test the relevance of paper in today's digital age has propelled her to expand and push the boundaries of her earlier work and is a theme explored in STPI's exhibition. Her fresh renditions for 'The River is Within Us' continue to challenge our perception of similarities and differences between cultures, with the ultimate emphasis on the absolute interconnection of humanity. Her latest works will be presented alongside Breath, which will be installed in the centre of the gallery.
Shirazeh Housiary will be in conversation with art critic, writer and novelist Sue Hubbard on Saturday 19 March from 2.30-3.30pm.
