'Sean Scully: Material World' at Thorvaldsens Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark
8 September 2022
'Material World', Sean Scully's first solo museum exhibition in Denmark, comprises works that interact with the architecture, colors and surroundings of the Thorvaldsens Museum. The artist chose the materials for this new, site-specific body of works with careful reference to Bertel Thorvaldsen’s life and art, as well as the history of Denmark. The exhibition is curated by Per Haubro Jensen in collaboration with Thorvaldsens Museum's director Annette Johansen and exhibition manager Siri Buric.
Three of the artworks have been made specifically for the museum, including a 29-foot-tall sculpture in the museum's front hall, a towering work in Italian black Carrara marble, and a monumental work for the square in front of the museum, made from local Danish wood that dates back to the 15th century. The exhibition also includes several other sculptures and drawings from Scully’s oeuvre as well as iconic paintings such as those from his continued Landline series.
'Sean Scully: Material World' continues until 5 March 2023. Find further information via Thordvalsens Museum.
