Sean Scully: Landline opens at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Connecticut

23 February 2019

I think of land, sea, sky. And they always make a massive connection. I try to paint this, this sense of the elemental coming together of land and sea, sky and land…stacked in horizon lines endlessly beginning and ending…” – Sean Scully

An exhibition of Sean Scully’s acclaimed Landline series opened on 23 February at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, travelling from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (13 September 2018 – 3 February 2019). Sean Scully: Landline presents a dramatic shift in the work of one of today’s most influential artists. With thick, gestural brushstrokes and loose bands of color, the Landline paintings show Scully’s transition away from his earlier hard-edged minimalism to his current, more expressive style.

The exhibition features nearly 50 oil paintings, pastels, watercolours, and photographs, and two aluminum Stack sculptures, including one large-scale, 30 layer sculpture which has been installed on the museum’s Main Street lawn. Running until 19 May, the exhibition is complimented by a series of talks and programming, including an In Conversation event on 11 March with Sean Scully and curator Patricia Hickson.
