'Ryan Gander: The Markers of Our Time' at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo, Japan
18 July 2022
Open from 16 July 2022, 'The Markers of Our Time' is Ryan Gander's first large-scale institutional exhibition in Tokyo, comprising sculpture, video and participatory elements utilising animatronics and motion sensors. The show brings together existing bodies of work with new pieces to transform the entirety of Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery's spaces into one cohesive artwork.
Each individual work speaks to themes that Gander has been preoccupied with over the last few years, including time, attribution of value and education, which gradually reveal themselves throughout the exhibition. Among the works on show are 2000 Year Collaboration (The Prophet) (2018), an animatronic mouse delivering a philosophical monologue from a whole in the wall; a pair of life-sized graphite and fibreglass Bit Part Player figures who lean, waiting, around the perimeter; and the 2022 series of Waiting Sculptures – black cubes across which a digital playbar moves in representation of the average duration of various actions, from 'the average time it takes to drive from Zagreb to Zurich', to 'the average duration of a blossoming cherry tree'.
The exhibition continues until 19 September. Find further information here.
