Ryan Gander’s ‘The Find’ Comes to Seoul, 31 August – 10 September 2026
4 September 2026
From 31 August – 10 September, Ryan Gander will present The Find in Seoul, marking the first realisation of his ongoing public art project in Korea and its fourth edition globally. Organised in collaboration with Lisson Gallery, British Embassy Seoul, Seoul Tourism Organization, Gangnam-gu Office and Laurence Geoffrey’s, the project will coincide with the opening of Frieze Seoul (2 – 5 September).
Treating Seoul as both a medium and a platform for artistic engagement, Gander will hide 16,000 specially designed coins across publicly accessible areas of the city. Each coin functions as a collectable artwork and decision-making tool, embossed with a different piece of wisdom to be carried, acted upon or passed on. Hidden across Euljiro, Hannam, Cheongdam and Samcheong, as well as areas of COEX, and in keeping with Gander’s practice, the coins invite participants to explore the city through chance encounters and unexpected discoveries.
Originally commissioned in 2023 by Factory International for Manchester International Festival, The Find has since been presented in Cáceres, Spain (2024) and Okayama, Japan (2025). Across each iteration, Gander explores ideas of value, exchange, attention and collective experience, inviting audiences to approach familiar surroundings with a renewed sense of wonder, curiosity and discovery.
