Pedro Reyes takes part in N Square's virtual nuclear mixer
27 May 2020
On Thursday 28 May from 4:30–5:30pm EST, Pedro Reyes will be in conversation with independent curator Pedro Alonzo, and President & CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Rachel Bronson, for N Square DC Hub's inaugural virtual nuclear mixer, in partnership with PopTech.
The speakers will discuss Amnesia Atomica, Reyes' three-storey inflatable mushroom cloud commissioned to "raise public awareness, revitalize the once vibrant anti-nuclear community and most importantly put pressure on political leaders, policymakers and global citizens by reminding them of the consequences of inaction."
The sculpture served as a central component of a three-day commemoration (held February 2020 in Mexico City, and originally scheduled to travel to New York City in April 2020) of the 53rd anniversary of the Treaty of Tlatelolco – a historic agreement declaring a nuclear weapons free zone for Latin America and the Caribbean. Amnesia Atómica continues Reyes’ work on disarmament, its title highlighting a possible disconnect for the public and world leaders from issues of nuclear threat.
The mixer will take place via Zoom, and participants are encouraged to join the conversation should they wish. The event is organised by PopTech's President Leetha Filderman and N Square DC Hub Director Sara Kutchesfahani. Email Sara at sara@nsquarecollaborative.org to RSVP, and to receive the Zoom link.
