Participatory installation 'Out of Sight' pays homage to Lawrence Weiner at Art Basel
14 June 2022
The 'Out of Sight' installation conveived by Lawrence Weiner is among the 70 large-scale projects presented at the 2022 edition of Art Basel, creating a space for public gathering and reflection.
Modeled on a hopscotch grid, the work aims to inspire and engage visitors through visualization, physicalizing positive thinking through the use of Weiner's signature typographic texts. Four separate grids are displayed, in English as well as French, German and Italian – the three official languages of Switzerland.
Speaking about the idea for the work, Weiner sai: 'A person coming in with whatever situation they find themselves in, the minute they have any thoughts about themselves going FROM HERE TO THERE, they will be able to stand in front of the marelle (French for hopscotch) and realize they first have to imagine themselves doing it, that is, assuming a position'.
