Solo exhibition by Haroon Mirza opens at ACCA Melbourne
11 September 2019
Haroon Mirza's first solo exhibition in Australia, 'Haroon Mirza: The Construction of an Act', opens on Saturday 14 September at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) in Melbourne. Comprised of new commissions alongside re-presentations of recent works, the exhibition provides a choreographed experience of Mirza's extensive and varied practice that encompasses sculptural assemblage, immersive installation and live performance. With its origin in music – in particular the rhythm, syncopation and sampling techniques informed by the artist’s experience as a DJ – Mirza likens his methodology to that of a composer, arranging both the aesthetic and acoustic properties of materials and space into new audible, visual and haptic forms.'The Construction of an Act' has been conceived as if the gallery were itself an instrument, with the exhibition forming an overall score. ACCA’s vast architecture was considered as a reverberation chamber, in which a disparate ensemble of works come together to form a conceptual and sonic whole. In a new commission especially for the exhibition, Mirza has constructed a residency studio within the gallery as a space for local and international collaborators to undertake week-long residencies, culminating in a live performance within the exhibition, as well as sonic and performative residues.
The exhibition continues until 17 November. Find more information on the ACCA website.
