Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg Awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

29 September 2025

Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg have been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a prestigious distinction for the Swedish art duo. Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is a French honorary award presented by the French Ministry of Culture. It is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the influence of the arts and literature in France and around the world.

France values diversity and artistic creativity, regardless of origin. With this award, the French ambassador honours two significant artists in contemporary art, whose iconic works are represented in prestigious collections at leading art institutions, such as Palais de Tokyo.

Both artists were born in 1978 and met in Berlin in 2004. Since then, they have created an eclectic and diverse body of work together. Nathalie Djurberg, a video artist and visual artist, sculpts figures in clay, which she then animates in her films. Hans Berg, composer and musician creates the sonic and musical landscapes for Nathalie's works. Their exhibitions offer explosive and sometimes unsettling experiences through immersive installations, sculptures, and films. The artistic experience is based on finely tuned and complex narratives that delve deep into the human psyche.

They were awarded the Le Lion d’argent for best emerging artists at the Venice Biennale for contemporary art in 2009, for their installation Making Worlds, while their first exhibition in France was titled The Skin Is a Thin Container and was shown at MAC Lyon in 2023.
