Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg open major survey in Frankfurt

Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Germany has opened Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg’s major survey exhibition ‘A Journey Through Mud and Confusion With Small Glimpses of Air’. Following presentations at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet and at MART in Rovereto, Italy, in 2018, the show brings together sculpture and some forty video animation and sound works from the past 15 years, as well as presenting their first work using Virtual Reality technology (It Will End in Stars, 2018).Both artists work individually in their respective disciplines - Djurberg creating props, clay figures and animation, with Berg producing music - before eventually joining to create their video and sound works. This exhibition is grouped around three significant large-scale installations: The Parade (2011), The Potato (2008), and The Experiment (2009) are on view for the first time together in Germany. Through their interplay of sculpture, sound, and moving pictures depicting animal and human caricatures, these installations implicate the viewer within Djurberg and Berg’s constructed environments, which constantly oscillate between the playful and the sinister. Katharina Dohm, curator of the exhibition at the Schirn, says: "Viewers find themselves, apparently by chance, in the position of a voyeur; they must decide how to relate to the figures’ excesses and vulnerability.”
