‘Marina Abramović’ at the Albertina Modern, Vienna, Austria

29 September 2025

From 10 October 2025 – 1 March 2026 the Albertina Modern presents ‘Marina Abramović’. This exhibition, curated in cooperation with Kunstforum Wien, will offer a comprehensive overview of the artist’s oeuvre. The focus will be on reenactments of the historical performances, which will take place daily throughout the exhibition.

Widely regarded as the pioneer of modern performance art, Marina Abramavoic has reshaped the course of art history through her groundbreaking work. Emerging from Belgrade in the 1970s, she has, over a career spanning more than five decades, established performance as a vital and enduring form within the visual arts. In 1978, she made her Viennese debut at the International Performance Festival.

Marina Abramović’s early Rhythm series combined concept with physicality, endurance with empathy, complicity with surrender, and passivity with risk. From the outset, her work explored time, silence, energy, and the heightened awareness provoked by long-duration performance—motifs that continue to define her oeuvre. For Abramović, the body was both subject and medium. By subjecting herself to pain, exhaustion, and danger, she persistently tested the limits of her physical and psychological being, pursuing emotional and spiritual transformation.
