Lisson Gallery at Frieze New York 2019
22 April 2019
Lisson Gallery's presentation at Frieze New York this year will focus on two artists: Leon Polk Smith and Pedro Reyes. Leon Polk Smith (1906-1996), considered one of the founders of the hard-edge style of Minimal, abstract art, rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s with his distinctive shaped canvas series — the Correspondences. The booth will highlight these large vibrant paintings, marking this pivotal moment in his career. Alongside this, the presentation will feature a series of new volcanic stone and Carrara marble sculptures by the Mexico City-based artist Reyes, an artist whose practice takes inspiration from both modern and ancient sources.Reye’s presentation at the Lisson Gallery booth will be complemented by his inclusion in Frieze Sculpture 2019, at the Rockefeller Center. This will be Reyes’ first Public Art presentation in NYC. Two artworks Jaguar, 2019, and Seer, 2019 will be placed inside 30 Rockefeller Plaza where Diego Rivera’s original mural was removed in 1934, for including an image of Vladimir Lenin and was replaced with Jose Maria Sert’s American Progress (1937).
Frieze New York will also be showcasing Virtual Reality (VR) works by artists Anish Kapoor, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, among others. The VR presentation will be experienced by visitors using headsets available inside the Electric booth, and via the Acute Art app, thus making the exhibition accessible to a global audience.
