Lisson Gallery artists participate in benefit exhibition 'Ice and Fire' for The Kitchen, New York

3 December 2020

From October 2020 through January 2021, New York non-profit arts organisation The Kitchen presents ‘Ice and Fire’, a three-part fundraising exhibition project supporting the renovation and reopening of their 19th Street space in Chelsea. As part of an international community of nearly forty artists, brought together for their past contributions to The Kitchen’s programme, Ai Weiwei and Cory Arcangel exhibit works within – and in dialogue with – the organisation’s historical three-story building which, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been closed to the public since March 2020. Before The Kitchen's establishment in 1986, the original 1920s ice warehouse was repurposed as a film production studio, and later became prominent artist studios throughout the 1970s. Situating works amidst administrative and technical equipment usually invisible to the public, ‘Ice and Fire’ demonstrates that a sense of the radical transformability of the working space has endured – and must continue to do so.

Video and sculptural works by Arcangel are currently on view for the exhibition's first phase, while Ai Weiwei's Cube (2009) will be installed in the coming weeks as the show develops.

‘Ice and Fire’ will continue to evolve online with the addition of new work by artists – including Tony Oursler – made in response to the installation on 19th Street. Additionally, three benefit prints produced in partnership with Absolut Art are to be made available over the course of the evolving three-part exhibition, the first of which is by Lawrence Weiner.
