‘Li Ran: An Intermezzo, Perhaps’ at Beiqiu Museum of Contemporary Art, Nanjing, China
From 4 April – 6 July, Beiqiu Museum of Contemporary Art presents 'An Intermezzo, Perhaps', a solo exhibition of works by Li Ran, curated by Wang Yamin. This exhibition highlights key works from the artist’s recent practice alongside his latest creations.
'An Intermezzo, Perhaps' explores the contradictions of the contemporary Chinese art scene, reflecting on the tensions between public and private, narcissism and detachment, and the anxieties of self-positioning. Li Ran reinterprets the theatrical concept of "intermezzo," using it to critique both the "little politics" of intellectuals and the complexities of China's historical and cultural context.
In recent years, Li Ran has shifted his focus to painting, questioning the politics surrounding art mediums and the contemporary obsession with political correctness in media discussions. Central to his work is humour, blending theatrical performance with self-reflection, providing an accessible language to critique the symbolic language of contemporary art.
The exhibition features a reconfigured presentation of Li Ran’s works, including film, painting, installation, performance, and text, inviting viewers to reconsider the role of exhibitions within the grand narrative of contemporary art.
