Julian Opie opens first exhibition in Busan, South Korea at F1963

F1963 presents the first solo exhibition in Busan, South Korea by Julian Opie. Conceived by the artist especially for the museum, the exhibition includes over 48 works from Opie's London studio as well as three large-scale, site-specific installations.

'Julian Opie In Busan' – the first solo exhibition to take place in F1963’s new exhibition halls – encompasses the museum’s façade and spreads into the gardens, bookshop and beyond. The exhibition has been developed by the artist, based on his first impressions of the museum and of Busan itself. He writes, “F1963 art centre seems to reflect the busy, bright, young (or booming if you prefer) city around it. I have tried to insert a series of works and projects to draw in the audience and to spread out from the factory spaces into the park and, by implication the town and its population beyond.”

Within the varied renovated factory spaces of Sukcheon Hall, the exhibition will lead viewers to come and go within a variety of scales and moods; the history of the industrial scene remaining alive in the building’s structure. At the centre of the exhibition is the new sculptural installation Medieval village. (2018), which invites a close encounter between the viewer and the artwork, crossing into a virtual world and suggesting engagement through reading and physically experiencing. Opie continues, “An exhibition is not just a collection of works; it’s a story and an experience.”
