John Akomfrah, Arthur Jafa and Zoé Whitley in conversation
16 November 2023
This special conversation between acclaimed filmmakers John Akomfrah and Arthur Jafa, moderated by art historian and curator Zoé Whitley, took place at 180 Studio at 180 The Strand on Friday 20 October 2023.
The talk precedes Akomfrah’s commission for the British Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia 2024. True to his practice and fastidiously researched films, the artist has ambitious plans for a constellation of film, sound and time-based works that continue his preoccupations with themes of memory, post-colonialism, temporality, ecology and aesthetics, while exploring urgent global questions of today.
With Venice in mind, and to ensure the British Council can present the artist’s monumental new work with impact in the British Pavilion, Lisson Gallery is working with the British Council to bring together a core group of Commissioning Patrons. In return for their support, Commissioning Patrons will enjoy a close involvement with the artist, the Associate Curator and the commissioner before, during and after the launch in Venice as well as privileged access to the British Pavilion in Venice and La Biennale throughout 2024.
