INLET Shanghai's inaugural art exhibition highlights works by Tatsuo Miyajima and Julian Opie
1 March 2022
The 'Urban Adventure Spatial Art Exhibition', a part of the INLET SHANGHAI ARTFEST, is now on view at the new INLET commercial area in Shanghai until 31 March 2022. Lisson Gallery is pleased to present work by Tatsuo Miyajima and Julian Opie in the show featuring local and international contemporary artists, architects, designers and science fiction writers, in the setting of Shanghai’s unique Shikumen (Stone Gate) buildings. Creating an urban adventure of art, the exhibition narrates the history and memories of Shanghai, offering visitors a journey through the passage of time to embrace heritage of the past, fulfillment of the present and aspirations for the future.
Among the works included are Tatsuo Miyajima’s Time Waterfall (2019), a four-dimensional LED display at 12 metres in height, and Headphones. (2020) by Julian Opie, which can be seen at the end of one of the area's Longtang (lanes characterised by their two or three-storey terrace houses with a wall and large gate in front of each dwelling). Through this figure, depicted mid-stride, the artist draws our attention to the urban phenomena of public spaces, and the tension between individuality and anonymity typical of experiences in large cities, with clear, simple forms, and precision of line and colouring.
