In memoriam: Grenville Davey 1961-2022

Lisson Gallery mourns the loss of Grenville Davey, an artist who showed with the gallery at the end of the 1980s and won the Turner Prize in 1992. In exhibitions such as ‘Recent Sculpture’ of 1987, Davey presented a number of his non-site-specific, self-contained objects that often ambiguously referred to objects from everyday life.

As Marjorie Allthorpe-Guyton wrote in her essay ‘Labil’, for the exhibition catalogue in 1989: "Davey’s achievement is that his work is aligned to Minimalism in its refusal of the illusion of representation and yet he reveals simultaneously how and why representation works. He manages this by exploiting the simplest of sculptural language and makes us sharply in touch with our emotional and physical experience of the world."
