On Friday 17 October, Lisson Gallery is pleased to present Hugh Hayden in conversation with Andrew Durbin, editor in chief of Frieze Magazine, at 27 Bell Street to discuss 'Hugh Hayden: Hughmanity', the artists seventh exhibition with Lisson Gallery.
In 'Hughmanity', the Texan-born artist expands upon his ongoing investigation of congregation, passage and assimilation through the transformation of familiar cultural symbols into allegories of community, rupture, and belief. These new works, meticulously crafted from trees through a series of techniques like felling, milling, carving, and laminating, extend Hayden’s sculptural language, while the introduction of painted surfaces signals a significant new expanding element within his practice.
Lisson Gallery’s presentation at Frieze London 2025 presents Hugh Hayden’s Zelig (2024), a striking trompe l’oeil sculpture composed of Sharptail grouse feathers meticulously applied to cardboard tubes to mimic the texture of wood. Evoking both natural form and human intervention, the piece explores themes of transformation, identity, and perception. This presentation coincides with his solo exhibition Hughmanity at the gallery’s London space, on view through 1 November 2025.
Friday 17 October, 11am at 27 Bell Street, London
