Hotel designed by Jonathan Monk opens in Okayama, Japan

18 October 2019

In collaboration with Go Hasegawa & Associates architects, artist Jonathan Monk has designed a new hotel, Jonathan Hasegawa, which is now open to guests in the city of Okayama, Japan. Situated close to the city's museums and the famous Korakuen gardens, the hotel is part of the Ishikawa Foundation's 'A&A' project to revitalise Okayama by working with artists to create residences from which to discover the city's arts and culture.

Jonathan Hasegawa has been designed to imitate the shape of the private houses that originally occupied its site. Drawing inspiration from his own approach of imitating the creations of existing artists, reinterpreting their value and originality, Monk reimagined the two buildings that originally stood separately on the site, adding a third new building in-between. These three buildings come together to form a single guest room.

Visit the A&A website for further information.
