'Hiroshi Sugimoto: Replay the melody' at Musée Soulages Rodez, France
24 March 2026
From 11 April – 13 September 2026, The Soulages Museum presents 'Replay the melody' an exhibition of works by Hiroshi Sugimoto,
His photographic work, which began in the 1970s in the United States, is imbued with a philosophical approach to time immemorial and millennia-old traditions, a quest for origins that also nourished the creative process of Pierre Soulages. Beyond this shared vision, Soulages and Sugimoto share a common preoccupation with light and shadow, a formal interest in the horizon line, space, and the unfolding of the artwork, as well as a strong connection to architecture. Although the two artists never met, these conceptual and formal connections are evident in the eight series by Hiroshi Sugimoto presented here, spanning five decades of creative output from the late 1970s to the early 2020s.
The power emanating from Hiroshi Sugimoto's work lies in his virtuoso technique within the photographic medium, which the museum is pleased to celebrate on the occasion of the bicentenary of photography. His fundamental links with painting are particularly highlighted in the exhibition, conceived in resonance with the museum's collections.
