Gerard Byrne features in inaugural FRONT International in Cleveland
28 June 2018
FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art is an exhibition comprised of artist commissions, performances, films, and public programs that will launch its inaugural edition in July of 2018. An American City: Eleven Cultural Exercises, in collaboration with museums, civic institutions, and alternative spaces across Ohio (Cleveland, Akron and Oberlin), will showcase an ambitious roster of projects, including performance and theater throughout the landscape and built environment. Featuring national, international and area-based artists at all points in their career, FRONT will examine the ever-changing and politically urgent conditions of an American city.
Commissioned for the 2017 edition of Skulptur Projekte Münster, Gerard Byrne's film In Our Time depicts the daily activities of an archetypal commercial radio station, provoking questions around the relationship between radio broadcasting, time, pop music and collective memory. As with many of Byrne’s previous works, In Our Time conjoins ideas of naturalism from film, physical presence from theatre, together with the concrete temporality of radio broadcasting, into a hybrid form influenced by Bertolt Brecht. In Our Time was previously exhibited at Lisson Gallery in New York from November to December 2017.
A discussion of Byrne's film will take place on 26 July at 7.30pm as part of FRONT's 'Radio, Radio' dialogues and performance series. More information can be found on their website.
FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art: An American City is on view through 30 September 2018.
