Daniel Buren 'Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile' at Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
24 February 2026
Until 12 April 2026, MAM Rio hosts the first Brazilian edition of Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile (Sail/Canvas – Canvas/Sail), a project by the artist Daniel Buren. Begun in 1975, the work transforms boat sails into an artistic medium, shifting the viewer's gaze and activating the surrounding space through movement, color, and form.
Over the course of five decades, the project has been presented in cities such as Geneva, Lucerne, Miami, and Minneapolis, always in direct dialogue with the local landscape and context. The project began with a regatta-performance in Guanabara Bay, where eleven Optimist sailboats depart from Marina da Glória with sails printed with Buren’s iconic vertical stripes, activating the route between the marina and Flamengo Beach as a moving artistic intervention. After the regatta, the sails were moved to MAM Rio, where they will become part of the exhibition derived from the regatta. Installed in self-supporting structures, the eleven sails will be arranged in the space according to the order of arrival of the regatta, following the protocol established by Buren since the project's inaugural editions.
Daniel Buren has punctuated the past 50 years of art with unforgettable interventions, controversial critical texts, thought-provoking public art projects and engaging collaborations with artists from different generations. Throughout his career Buren has created artworks that complicate the relationship between art and the structures that frame it.
