Susan Hiller in 'Building Romance' at Japan’s Toyota Municipal Museum of Art
22 January 2018
The exhibition ‘Building Romance’, showing at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Tokyo from 20 January until 8 April, inspects the development of art in the post-Romantic era and includes Susan Hiller’s video work Lost and Found (2016).
Considering present concepts of ‘romance’ in divergence to those that emerged from the Enlightenment era, the exhibition places emphasis upon works that consider subject matters around 'family, love and land'. Hiller’s explores the polylingual nature of today’s lived experiences within urban environments, embracing cultural translation by weaving together 23 different languages such as Arabic, Livonian and endangered idioms.
Originally commissioned by the Pérez Art Museum in Miami, Hiller’s video installation continues her practice of changing the register of contemporary museum and gallery spaces, creating immersive and haunting environments in which the viewer succumbs to a multi-sensory experience.
