Anish Kapoor discusses 'dark maternal waters' of Venice and his dual-part presentation with Frieze

14 June 2022

"The whole tradition of this building is about giving appearance to objects" says Anish Kapoor of Venice's Gallerie dell’Accademia, where he is exhibiting his own works in dialogue with the building's collection, "and I think I'm sort of playing with the idea of the object appearing and its exact opposite: which is the object disappearing."

Watch Kapoor reflect on his major dual-site presentation at the Gallerie dell’Accademia and Palazzo Manfrin, on view during the 59th Venice Biennale. He spoke with Frieze about Vantablack — the ‘blackest material in the world’ — the city’s rich history and ‘dark maternal waters’, as well as the visionary painting, sculpture and monumental installations on view through 9 October 2022.
