Anish Kapoor awarded the 2025 Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize
13 September 2024
Anish Kapoor has been awarded the prestigious Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize by the city of Duisburg and the Rhineland Regional Council for his life's work. The award was decided by an international jury at the Lehmbruck Museum. Anish Kapoor is being honored for the highest excellence with which his often space-expanding sculptures open up new dimensions of human perception.
The jury, chaired by museum director Dr. Söke Dinkla, honored Anish Kapoor "as one of the most important and innovative artists of his generation. With great imagination, he expands our idea of the possible and challenges all of our senses. It is the magic of the monochrome, symbol-laden colors, reflective surfaces and monumental forms that makes Anish Kapoor's work unique. He uses a wide variety of materials, from color pigments to wax, PVC and silicone to stone and steel, with enormous technical mastery and precision. In particular, the interplay of architecture and sculpture, with which Kapoor goes beyond the limits of what is supposedly possible, creates correspondences with the architecture of the Lehmbruck Museum."
Anish Kapoor says: "I am honored to receive the prestigious Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize for Sculpture. Many esteemed colleagues have received this award before me and I am very touched to stand next to them."
