Angela de la Cruz wins Sunny Dupree Family Award for a Woman Artist
15 October 2021
The Royal Academy has announced Angela de la Cruz as the recipient of the Sunny Dupree Family Award for a Woman Artist for 2021.
With her practice elegantly situated between painting and sculpture, de la Cruz engages with the very discourse of painting by targeting its basic anatomy – the stretcher. Normally left to its job of keeping the canvas smooth and pliant, her works are often twisted and bent out of shape. By breaking its form, de la Cruz breaks convention, quite literally, by mangling the stretcher and piercing the flat edifice of the canvas to unleash it into three-dimensional space.
Her 2021 work Loop L (Yellow) is currently on view in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, until 2 January 2022.
