Angela de la Cruz's exhibition 'Homeless' travels to Santiago
4 March 2019
Angela de la Cruz's major exhibition 'Homeless', curated by Carolina Grau, has travelled from its inaugural presentation at the Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela's Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea. Exploring de la Cruz's specific language that negotiates the similarities and tensions between painting and sculpture, 'Homeless' presents over two decades-worth of works, taking its name from one of her first works to manipulate the rigid structure of the canvas stretcher, created in 1996.Household furniture such as chairs, tables and cupboards, largely fabricated from wood, have been consistently present in de la Cruz's work, though in recent years this has broadened with the incorporation of aluminium into her work. Where once a painting would be created to then be altered and damaged by hand, the artist's more recent works see these metal forms first crushed and misshapen by machinery, then carefully hand-painted in thick coats of oil an acrylic. Through various bodies of work this exhibition further examines the role of human interaction with painting and sculpture, and how de la Cruz's impression of this has changed throughout her career.
'Homeless' is a co-production of CGAC and Azkuna Zentroa at Bilbao, and is on view until 19 May. Find out more about the exhibition on their website.
