Ryan Gander has established an international reputation through artworks that materialise in many different forms – from sculpture to film, writing, graphic design, installation, performance and more besides. Through associative thought processes that connect the everyday and the esoteric, the overlooked and the commonplace, Gander’s work involves a questioning of language and knowledge, as well as a reinvention of both the modes of appearance and the creation of an artwork. His works are ultimately puzzles to be deciphered, encouraging viewers to make their own associations and invent their own narratives.
I be... (lx), 2023 belongs to a series of gold, stately, antique mirrors that are partially covered with marble resin casts of draped dust sheets. With reflections obscured from view, the works’ impenetrability frustrates the gaze of viewers, starkly revealing the barriers inherent to self-realisation. This series continues the artist’s interest in historical and contemporary ideas and influences colliding within a single object; from the stylistic reference to ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, to the unveiled narcissism of the ‘selfie’ age.
In his forthcoming show at Lisson London titled PUNTO!, opening 13th September 2023, the artist presents a new animatronic installation that questions our obsession with the economics of growth over stasis and stability, alongside a new series of bronze figurative works and an over-animated / over-annotated documentary, originally made for the BBC, both relating to the idea of the self and the dramaturgical nature of the masks we choose to wear and the masks that choose to wear us.
